Amsadong prehistory settlement

Amsadontseonsajugeoji is a habitation site from the Korean Neolithic period, dating from 3000 to 4000 BC. It is a settlement consisting in a group of pit houses built next to each other, forming a community.

Some 20 house sites were found in three culture-bearing strata existing at the site. The lowest layer contains artifacts from a typical comb pattern pottery culture; most house sites belong to this stratum. The middle layer yielded quantities of patternless potteries, exhibiting aspects of the transitional period following the comb pattern pottery era. The upper layer belongs to the Baekje culture, and produced collective jar-coffin tombs and stone structural pieces belonging to houses.

Amongst the three strata, the bottom layer is considered one of the most representative sites of Neolithic culture in the west-central region of Korea. The vestiges of 20 Neolithic pit houses were unearthed, revealing their structure, with auxiliary facilities, stone mounds, and a wide variety of patterned potteries and stone tools. The majority of the houses are pit house-style round houses; some are square with rounded angles. A few have a fireplace at the center of house, ringed by stones. Many houses faced south.

Amid the daily objects unearthed from the site, including comb pattern potteries, stone axes, stone arrowheads, scrapers and fishing net weights, there were also carbonized acorns and grating plates, and grating stones, indicating that acorns were the staple food of these Neolithic Koreans. The presence of farming tools such as hand-held ploughs and stone scythes at the site suggests that agriculture was practiced to a moderate extent.
